When God gave the Ten Commandments, He said:
“You shall not take the Name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His Name in vain.”
(Exodus 20:7, NASB)
Many people think this commandment only means we shouldn’t swear using God’s Name. While that is part of it, the original Hebrew reveals that the meaning is far deeper—and it affects the way we live every single day.
The Hebrew Meaning
The phrase “take the Name… in vain” in Hebrew is:
לֹא תִשָּׂא אֶת־שֵׁם־יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ לַשָּׁוְא (Lo tissa et-shem Adonai Eloheicha lashav)
Breaking it down:
tissa — “to lift, carry, bear” — not just to say, but to carry His Name as a representative. shem — “name” — meaning identity, character, and reputation. lashav — “for emptiness, falsehood, worthlessness.”
So, it literally means:
“Do not carry the identity or reputation of the LORD your God in a false, empty, or deceitful way.”
What This Looks Like in Real Life
False Representation of God. If we claim to follow God but live in ways that contradict His Word, we misrepresent Him (Leviticus 22:31–32). Using God’s Name to justify sin saying “God told me” when He didn’t, or using His Name for manipulation, is a serious offense (Jeremiah 23:25–27). Breaking oaths made in His Name. If you swear an oath “by the Name of the LORD” and don’t keep it, you have taken His Name in vain (Matthew 5:33–37). Speaking His Name lightly even casual, flippant use of His Name shows a lack of reverence (Leviticus 19:12).
Why This Matters
We Represent the King — As God’s people, we bear His Name (Numbers 6:27). It Damages His Reputation — Hypocrisy profanes His Name before others (Ezekiel 36:20–23). God Holds Us Accountable — This commandment carries a warning: God will not leave the guilty unpunished.
How to Keep This Commandment
Live Consistently — Let your life match your confession of faith (Colossians 3:17). Speak Truthfully — Don’t claim God said something He didn’t. Show Reverence — Speak about God with honor and respect. Be Careful with Commitments — If you invoke God’s Name in a promise, keep it.
Final Thought
The Third Commandment is about more than just avoiding bad language. It’s about living as a truthful, faithful representative of the God whose Name we carry. Every word we speak and every action we take reflects either honor or dishonor on His Name.
