Salvation in Jesus Christ is the greatest gift God offers humanity — eternal life, forgiveness of sins, and peace with God. But the Bible makes it clear that this gift must be received in a specific way. It is not earned by good works but is given by grace through faith.
Let’s look at what the Scriptures say about the requirements for salvation.
1. Repentance — Turning from Sin to God
Repentance is a deep change of mind and heart that turns away from sin and turns toward God. It’s not just feeling sorry for your sin; it’s making a choice to leave it behind and follow God’s ways.
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” — Matthew 4:17
“Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out.” — Acts 3:19
Without repentance, there is no forgiveness, because we cannot cling to sin and Christ at the same time.
2. Faith in Jesus Christ
Faith is more than believing facts about Jesus — it’s trusting Him fully as Savior, Lord, and the only way to God.
“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.” — Acts 16:31
“For by grace you have been saved through faith… it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” — Ephesians 2:8–9
Faith means relying on Christ’s finished work on the cross and His resurrection — not on your own righteousness.
3. Confessing Jesus as Lord
Salvation is a personal matter, but it’s not private. The Bible teaches that we must openly acknowledge our allegiance to Christ.
“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” — Romans 10:9–10
Confession is an outward declaration of an inward faith.
4. Baptism as an Act of Obedience
Baptism does not save by itself, but it is commanded by Christ as the public declaration of our faith and union with Him. It symbolizes our death to sin and new life in Christ.
“Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.” — Mark 16:16
“Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins…” — Acts 2:38
Baptism is an important step of obedience for every believer.
5. Continuing in Faith and Obedience
True salvation is not a one-time decision followed by living however we want. It’s a lifelong journey of following Jesus.
“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples.” — John 8:31
“Continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel…” — Colossians 1:23
We must remain faithful, allowing the Holy Spirit to transform us day by day.
Salvation Is God’s Gift — Received His Way
The Bible’s message is clear:
Repent of your sins Believe in Jesus Christ Confess Him as Lord Follow Him in obedience, including baptism Continue in faith until the end
All of this is possible only by God’s grace, through the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” — Romans 6:23
