In an age when sermons are livestreamed, teachings go viral, and countless voices claim authority, believers face a challenge unlike any before: How do we know what is true? The Apostle John warned, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1).
The internet has opened wide doors for the Gospel—but also for deception. Anyone can post a “prophecy,” claim revelation, or reinterpret Scripture for likes and followers. Some messages sound biblical, yet beneath the surface, they lead hearts away from Christ. Paul’s words still ring true: “For the time will come when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions” (2 Timothy 4:3).
The Danger of Digital Noise
Endless streams of podcasts, clips, and posts can dull our hunger for God’s Word. Instead of sitting with the Scriptures, many scroll for the next “inspiring” soundbite. Yet Jesus Himself prayed, “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth” (John 17:17). Without grounding in the Word, we become vulnerable to clever deception.
The Call to Test Everything
Scripture does not tell us to accept or reject everything we hear—but to test. “Test everything; hold fast what is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21). Testing means measuring every message against the unchanging Word of God. Does the teaching exalt Christ or man? Does it encourage holiness or compromise? Does it align with the full counsel of Scripture—or twist it for personal gain?
Walking Wisely Online
The believer’s digital life should mirror their walk in the Spirit. A few guardrails can help:
Stay rooted in Scripture—read more Bible than blogs. Check the fruit—does the teacher display humility, repentance, and godly character (Matthew 7:16)? Avoid the crowd mentality—truth is not measured by likes, shares, or followers. Seek counsel—trusted, Spirit-filled brothers and sisters can help discern truth.
Anchored in Christ
The ultimate safeguard is intimacy with Christ. “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). When we walk closely with the Shepherd, His voice becomes clear—even amid a thousand competing echoes.
The digital world will only grow louder. But if we are anchored in Christ, strengthened by His Word, and guided by His Spirit, we will not be swept away. Instead, we will stand as lights of truth in a world of noise.
