The New Testament consistently teaches that salvation is exclusively through Jesus Christ, and that eternal life comes through hearing and believing His Word. This includes a clear warning from Jesus Himself:
“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” (Matthew 7:13–14)
Jesus’ words emphasize that life is found only on the narrow path of faith in Him, while most remain on the broad way leading to destruction.
Salvation Comes Through Hearing and Believing
Jesus repeatedly teaches that eternal life is found in Him:
• “Whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life… whoever does not believe is condemned already.” (John 3:16–18)
• “Whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life.” (John 5:24)
• “No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
The apostles echo this teaching:
• “There is salvation in no one else… no other name under heaven… by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)
• “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17)
• “Everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name.” (Acts 10:43–44)
Paul’s logic in Romans 10 makes the process explicit: to be saved, one must call on the Lord, which requires belief, which requires hearing, which requires preaching. Without the gospel being proclaimed, no one can believe or be saved.
The Unevangelized and God’s Justice
What about those who have never heard of Jesus? The New Testament addresses this indirectly:
• Humanity is accountable to God through creation and conscience (Romans 1–2).
• Salvation, however, is only through Christ and faith in Him (John 14:6, Acts 4:12).
• Missionary work is urgent because without hearing the gospel, people cannot believe, and therefore cannot be saved (Romans 10:13–17).
Even those who are unaware of Christ are dependent on the message being proclaimed to them. The NT presents no alternative path to salvation outside of faith in Jesus.
Conclusion
Strictly according to the New Testament:
• The way to eternal life is narrow, and only those who hear and believe in Christ enter it.
• Missionary work is essential — the unevangelized remain on the broad road to destruction unless someone preaches Christ to them.
• Faith is inseparable from hearing the Word, and salvation is inseparable from Christ.
Jesus and the apostles leave no ambiguity: eternal life comes only through belief in Him, and the hearing of His Word is the necessary first step. The urgency of the gospel is universal — for all who have heard, and for those who have yet to hear.
