The Unevangelized and God’s Judgment: A New Testament Study (2 of 5)

The New Testament is clear that salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, but what about those who have never heard the gospel? Scripture addresses this question repeatedly, emphasizing both God’s justice and the necessity of preaching.

1. Humanity’s Accountability

Even those who never heard Christ are accountable:

• Romans 1:18–20 – Humanity has knowledge of God through creation, leaving all “without excuse.”

• Romans 2:12–16 – People are judged according to conscience, even apart from the Law.

The apostles teach that God is perfectly just, judging everyone fairly according to the light they have received.

2. Salvation Only Through Christ

Faith in Jesus is the essential requirement:

• John 14:6 – “No one comes to the Father except through me.”

• Acts 4:12 – “There is salvation in no one else… by which we must be saved.”

• 1 John 5:11–12 – Eternal life is found only in the Son.

Without faith in Christ, there is no salvation.

3. Hearing the Gospel is Essential

Paul emphasizes the necessary link between preaching, hearing, and faith:

• Romans 10:13–17 – Salvation requires calling on the Lord, which requires belief, which requires hearing, which requires preaching.

• Acts 13:46–48 – People cannot believe unless the gospel is presented to them.

• 1 Peter 1:23–25 – Salvation comes through the living and abiding Word of God.

Faith cannot exist apart from hearing the message of Christ. Missionary work is therefore not optional—it is the channel through which the unevangelized can come to salvation.

4. Jesus on the Narrow and Broad Way

Matthew 7:13–14 – “Enter by the narrow gate… the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” Most people are on the broad road to destruction; only those who respond to God’s Word enter the narrow way to life.

5. Implications for the Unevangelized

• Those who knowingly reject Christ are condemned (John 3:18, John 12:48, 2 Thessalonians 1:8–9).

• Those who have never heard remain accountable to God and dependent on someone preaching the gospel to them (Romans 10:14–17).

• The New Testament presents no alternative path to salvation outside of faith in Jesus, making global proclamation urgent.

Conclusion

The New Testament consistently links hearing, believing, and salvation. While God judges righteously, the unevangelized are dependent on the gospel being preached. Missionary work is therefore an urgent responsibility for all believers, and the narrow gate remains the only path to eternal life.

Understanding the fate of the unevangelized reminds us of the urgency and importance of sharing the gospel with every nation, people, and language.
