Introduction
From the prophets of old to the apostles of Christ, the warning has been clear: when shepherds exploit the flock, the wrath of God will not be far behind. Ezekiel thundered, “Woe to the shepherds of Israel who only take care of themselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock?” (Ezekiel 34:2). Jesus Himself warned of wolves who would come in sheep’s clothing (Matthew 7:15).
Yet today, pulpits are filled with men and women who do not serve the people of God but enslave them. They fleece the flock, corrupt the truth, and elevate themselves as kings rather than servants. Their sins are not hidden—they echo the abominations of Israel’s false prophets, who prophesied lies for gain and committed immorality under the guise of God’s name.
The Spirit of God still speaks: woe to the shepherds who devour the flock.
The Abuses of False Shepherds
1. Financial Exploitation
• Demanding tribute from the flock—whether $100 birthday offerings, luxury gifts, or coerced tithes.
• Embezzling funds meant for ministry and mission, funneling them into personal wealth.
• Preaching prosperity while widows and orphans remain neglected.
Paul warned of those who suppose “godliness is a means of gain” (1 Timothy 6:5). Such men are not servants of Christ but merchants of souls.
2. Sexual Sin and Exploitation
• Pastors seducing or abusing congregants under spiritual authority.
• Cover-ups of sexual immorality to protect reputations rather than protect the vulnerable.
• Wolves preying on the weak while claiming anointing.
The Lord sees every secret deed. Hebrews 13:4 reminds us: “God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.” No pulpit or title will shield such men from His holy gaze.
3. Manipulation and Spiritual Coercion
• Leaders declaring, “God told me you must give me your house,” twisting divine authority for personal gain.
• Holding members hostage with threats of curses if they question leadership.
• Turning worship into a stage for control rather than freedom in Christ.
This is sorcery clothed in Christian language. It is not shepherding but domination. Christ said, “It shall not be so among you. Whoever would be great among you must be your servant” (Matthew 20:26).
4. Idolatry of Leadership
• Pastors elevated as untouchable “men of God,” beyond correction or accountability.
• Congregations taught to revere leaders more than Christ.
• Titles and positions exalted while the humility of service is despised.
This is the spirit of Diotrephes, who “loves to put himself first” (3 John 9). To idolize leaders is to dethrone Christ.
God’s Prophetic Warnings
The Lord has spoken clearly throughout His Word:
• Jeremiah 23:1 – “Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!”
• Ezekiel 34:10 – “I am against the shepherds, and I will require my sheep at their hand.”
• Matthew 24:51 – The unfaithful servant will be “cut in pieces and put with the hypocrites—in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
• James 3:1 – “Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.”
God does not overlook exploitation. The false shepherd may build an empire of stone and gold, but it will crumble in a day. Their name may be exalted now, but it will rot in eternity if they do not repent.
The Call to Repentance
Judgment is not God’s desire, but it is His certainty against unrepentant sin. Christ still offers mercy to every leader who will humble themselves, renounce greed, flee immorality, and return to the calling of a servant.
To the flock: do not be complicit in their sin. Do not fund corruption. Do not bow to manipulation. Test everything by the Word of God. Christ alone is the Head of the Church.
Why This Matters
These abuses are not mere scandals—they are stumbling blocks to the Gospel. Every time a shepherd falls into greed or lust, the name of Christ is blasphemed among the nations. The Lord Himself said it would be better for a millstone to be tied around one’s neck and be cast into the sea than to cause one of His little ones to stumble (Luke 17:2).
If the Church does not purge itself of these corrupt practices, God Himself will. The days of judgment are coming swiftly.
Conclusion
The hour is late, and the Lord is purifying His Bride. False shepherds will be exposed. The proud will be brought low. The idols of money, power, and pleasure will be toppled.
Let every pastor, teacher, and leader remember: you are not kings—you are servants. You are not lords—you are under-shepherds. You are not the Christ—you point to Christ.
Repent, for the axe is already laid to the root of the trees. Every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire (Matthew 3:10).
