One of the greatest gifts the Lord has given His people is His Word. Through it, He has made Himself known—not in scattered pieces or disconnected stories, but through one beautiful and unfolding revelation that finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ. For this reason, it is so important that we read the teachings of Jesus in the Gospels alongside the whole counsel of Scripture. When we do, we discover that the God who called Abraham, delivered Israel, spoke through the prophets, sent His Son into the world, and will one day make all things new is the same faithful God throughout every page. His holiness never changes, His mercy never weakens, His justice is always righteous, and His steadfast love endures forever.
As we learn to read the Bible as a unified whole, we become less vulnerable to teachings that may sound compelling but are built on isolated passages or human reasoning rather than the full testimony of God’s Word. The Lord never intended His people to be spiritually tossed about by every new idea or persuaded by every confident voice. Instead, He calls us to grow into maturity, becoming firmly rooted in the truth that He has graciously revealed. This is why the example of the Bereans remains so encouraging. They received the teaching of the apostles with eagerness, yet they also opened the Scriptures daily to examine whether these things were so. Their confidence was not in the reputation of the messenger but in the faithfulness of the God who had spoken.
That same humble posture is just as necessary today. It is easy to inherit traditions, repeat familiar phrases, or embrace popular interpretations without ever slowing down to ask whether they truly reflect the whole counsel of God. At other times, we may come to Scripture with conclusions already formed, quietly asking the Bible to confirm what we have decided instead of allowing the Bible to shape what we believe. Yet the Lord invites us to something better. He calls us to approach His Word with reverence, humility, and teachable hearts, allowing each passage to speak in its own context while remembering that every part of Scripture contributes to the grand story of His redeeming work in Christ.
Our desire should never be to win arguments or defend long-held assumptions. Rather, it should be to know the Lord more faithfully and to love His truth more deeply. Because we love His church, we should encourage one another to test every teaching by the Scriptures, to hold fast to what is good, and to rightly handle the word of truth. As we do, the Holy Spirit graciously establishes our hearts, strengthens our faith, and keeps us from being carried away by empty philosophies or the shifting opinions of the age. Anchored in God’s unchanging Word, we are able to stand with confidence, not because we trust our own understanding, but because we trust the One who has spoken and whose truth endures forever.
